A modern TEFL course

TEFL Lemon has been writing class materials and running a major blog in China for many years. One of the things we have done is to look at and review online TEFL courses from global providers. In one case, we were looking at ‘technology in the classroom’ and one of the tips in a unit was to look at the tape counter before you started your class, so you could re-wind the tape cassette back to where you were for the second listening. If you are under 30 years old, then you may have no clue what I’m talking about, and this is my point; the online TEFL course I was looking at was woefully out-of-date and was clearly written in the early 2000’s, but is still being used to train English teachers now, unchanged and unedited since then. This is what prompted us to write our own online TESOL course to compete with, and beat, the online teaching courses out there already.

Written using the very latest research

The TEFL Lemon 180-Hour Higher Certificate in TESOL has been written using the very latest research in English Language Teaching methodologies. We include in our online course all the very best bits of other courses, omitting the parts less useful, and adding in our own work to make what we feel is the very best online TEFL course anywhere in the world. After Covid over the last few years, many lessons were forced to go online, with teachers having to go into new realms of teaching through a screen. We have you covered with a detailed and dedicated unit on teaching English online. Again, we have used the very latest research to inform this unit. This isn’t the only unit in this online teaching course to use up-to-the-minute research, all of the 20 units in the Higher Certificate in TESOL Course have been informed by the latest research in the field. You won’t find a better online TEFL course.

What does the 180-Hour Higher Certificate in TESOL Course contain?

The course is spread of 20 units or modules, with each unit specifically chosen to help shape you into a great TEFL teacher by the end of the course. We’ve even put a lot of thought into the order of the units, so they will make sense to you as you progress through the course. Whether you are completely new to TEFL teaching, or you have a few years of TEFL experience under your belt, then the 180-Hour TEFL Lemon course will help you grow and excel as an English teacher.

A sleek platform for learning

The online course is put onto a sleek learning platform which you can log into with your own password. There, you’ll be able to move through each detailed and info-packed unit, which have audio and video segments to assist with your learning. After you’ve read through each unit, you’ll have a ‘consolidation section’ to write out, where you can go over the key points of each unit to help cement your understanding and confidence in the key areas. This is all carefully designed so you build your teaching knowledge piece by piece, so you really ‘know your stuff’.

Moving through the TEFL course

After your tutor has looked through your completed ‘consolidation section’, you’ll be ready to take the unit quiz, which is a multiple-choice assessment to make sure that you’ve learnt what you have meant to have learnt. Once you’ve passed the quiz, then the next unit ‘unlocks’ and you can move through the course. By unit 20 of the course, you will have grown and matured as a TEFL teacher and will be more prepared to deliver quality classes than with other TEFL courses.

Assessment on our online TEFL course

Any good TEFL course must have assessment, otherwise the course provider doesn’t know whether or not you’ve taken onboard what you have supposed to before sending out your certificate. There are a number of good reasons for assessment, and we look in detail at this in Unit 14. The assessments in the TEFL Lemon online TESOL course are varied, and hopefully, fun. First, we have a pre-course video task, where you need to upload a video of yourself to quickly introduce yourself to your tutor and so say ‘hi!’ One of the reasons we do this is to assess your English level and eligibility for the course.

Following this, you’ll do unit quizzes at the end of each unit to make sure you’ve learned as we would expect you to. You’ll need to get 85% in your quiz, or you’ll need to take it again.

Reflective journal

There is also a mid-way Reflective Journal after Unit 12. Here, you’ll have to opportunity to look back on what you’ve learned and reflect on this. You’ll be asked to talk about something in the course which you’ve particularly enjoyed and have grown from. You can read some of the reflective journals from our trainees in our TEFL Lemon course blog here.

Finally, you’ll be asked to write a 1000-word essay on a TEFL-related topic of your choice. This will be graded by your tutor and is the final thing you’ll do on your course. Following successful submission, you’ll be sent your 180-Hour Higher Certificate in TESOL.
